El Paso Opera’s ‘West Side Story,’ today and Saturday 7:30 p.m., Sunday 2 p.m., Plaza Theatre.

Mel Brooks, Yong Frankenstein, November 20, 7 p.m., Plaza Theatre.

Sound Track Inc., & Magic Space Entertainment Present, ‘The Christmas Music of Mannheim Steamroller,’ by Chips Davis, November 30, 7:30 p.m., Plaza Theatre.

Movie, ‘The Ides of March,’ R, Opens today.  George Clooney co-wrote, directed and co-stars in this dramedy about a young idealist (Ryan Gosling) who learns hard life lessons on the political campaign trail.   It’s meat and weighty and relevant, until a disappointing plot twit near the end.  Marisa Tomei, Paul Giammatti, Evan Rachel Wood and Philip Seymour Hoffman also star.  Two and a half star rating.

Movie, ‘Real Steel,’ PG 13, Opens today.  A horribly predictable mash up of ‘The Champ,’ and Rock Em, Sock Em Robots.  Hugh Jackman stars in the film version of a Richard Matheson story about a down on his luck boxer and a sleazebag scraping by as a promoter of brawling robots, who suddenly has custody of his 11 year old son (Dakota Goyo).  The only bright spot is the production values:  Hollywood robots have come a long way.  One and a half star rating.

Movie, ‘Restless,’ PG 13, Opens today.  The Story of a morbid young man (Henry Hopper) and a terminally ill girl (Mia Wasikowska).  Director Gus Van Sant effectively creates a dream world with its own odd, internal symbolism, but the movie’s serious subject is trivialized by the characters’ overly self-conscious stylishness.  Two star rating.
